The Swedish Telecom Market report is Sweden’s most important survey of telecom operators’ subscriptions, revenues, data traffic, etc., within electronic communications. The report is based on the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority’s (PTS) own primary data collection which surveys the development of over 500 operators and other actors. All comparisons refer to 31 December 2015 compared to the same date in 2014.

The number of mobile subscriptions in Sweden as at 31 December 2015 was 14.8 million, which was an increase of 2 %. Subscriptions with over 1 GB of data, (mostly smartphones) increased by 6 % to 6.7 million, while subscriptions with call only or with data under 1 GB continue to decline. There were 2.2 million subscriptions for mobile broadband as a stand-alone service, which is a decrease of 1 % and a trend shift.

Fibre subscriptions continues to grow

The total number of broadband subscriptions was 12.4 million, which was an increase of 4 %. Of these, 3.5 million were fixed broadband via fibre, cable TV or xDSL. In recent years, it is fibre that has accounted for the largest increase. These subscriptions increased by 19% and amounted to 1.7 million. The mobile broadband subscriptions amounted to 8.9 million and it is mobile broadband as an additional service (primarily smartphones) that is increasing.

Number of IP telephony subscriptions is now larger than traditional telephony

There are now more IP telephony subscriptions than there are subscriptions for traditional fixed-line telephony (PSTN and ISDN).

There was a total of 3.5 million fixed-line telephony subscriptions in Sweden, which represented a decrease of 5 %. IP telephony subscriptions increased by 7 % and amounted 1.9 million. An estimated 26 % of IP telephony subscriptions were inactive according to Swedish Telecom Market in the first half of 2015.

Significant increase in data roaming

Swedish subscribers used 1.1 PB of data while roaming abroad, which is an increase of 75 %. Almost all data roaming took place within the EU/EEA. These Swedish subscribers called for 199 million minutes, which is on the same level as the previous year. The number of text messages sent amounted to 153 million, a decrease of 5 % from the previous year.

The amount of data transferred via mobile networks in Sweden continued to grow and reached 472 PB, an increase of 29 %. The average amount of data used per month for a private subscription increased from 2.0 to 3.0 GB.

Increase in revenues from mobile subscriptions and fixed internet

End-user revenue from electronic communications was SEK 52.1 billion, and this has remained on a stable level in recent years. It is the revenue from mobile call and data services that has increased most, a jump of 3 % to SEK 29.6 billion. Revenue from fixed internet increased by 7 % to SEK 10.4 billion. The average revenue per household was SEK 636 (excluding VAT) per month, which is on level with the previous year.

IPTV (fibre and xDSL) is largest digital TV platform

There were 5.2 million subscriptions on traditional pay-TV, which is the same number as the previous year TV via fibre and fibre LAN was the only platform which increased. The number of subscriptions was just under 1.0 million, which was an increase of 10 %. Revenue from basic TV subscriptions was unchanged at SEK 8.5 billion.
