Göran Marby becomes new chair of BEREC in 2014

Göran Marby, Director-General of the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS), has been chosen to chair the European cooperation body BEREC in 2014. The election took place at the BEREC plenary session of 6-7 June in Athens, Greece.

In addition to chairing the organisation in 2014, this commitment also entails acting as vice chair in the periods July-December 2013 and January-June 2015.

BEREC (Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications) is a European cooperation body where the national regulatory authorities (NRAs) for electronic communications in Europe collaborate to promote harmonisation and competition of benefit to consumers. BEREC is composed of the 27 heads or nominated high-level representatives of the EU NRAs. The European Commission, the EFTA and applicant countries also participate. BEREC has an administrative office in Riga.

"This choice shows that there is much confidence in PTS within the EU. I hope to use this position to further strengthen the positive cooperation within BEREC. Efficient cooperation benefits a continued positive development on the electronic communications market; and this is a very important market for the economic development of Europe. Well-adjusted regulation is key to developing the market in the best way possible. BEREC plays an important role in this regulation work, with its solid knowledge base regarding the national markets", says Göran Marby.
