Rapid expansion of mobile broadband according to PTS survey

4G networks now cover an increasingly large proportion of Sweden. In autumn 2014, 60% of the surface area had 4G network coverage that provides approximately 10 Mbit/s broadband speed. This is an increase of almost 20 percentage points, according to the annual PTS survey of mobile network expansion.

The ongoing expansion of mobile networks is clearly reflected in the Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) survey, which the agency will submit to the government today. Coverage for mobile broadband services has increased rapidly, primarily through 4G roll-outs in surface coverage frequency bands. This coverage, which provides an approximate speed of 10 Mbit/s, has increased from 40% to approximately 60% of the land surface. This development can also be seen in the number of mast locations which have been upgraded to faster 3G and 4G in more than 2,500 cases.

Coverage for voice services, which so far can be offered in 2G and 3G networks, remains relatively unchanged compared with the survey from 2013. The total coverage in the country for voice services was just over 83%.

"We see a positive development of coverage in the country, and several operators have announced that the expansion of mobile broadband networks will continue. PTS will continue its efforts to ensure that the whole country will have access to good services, through frequency allocation, dialogues at the regional level and monitoring of coverage requirements," says Göran Marby, Director-General of PTS.

The least densely populated counties have the lowest coverage for both voice and mobile broadband services. PTS has been commissioned to examine if and in which way the 700 MHz band can be used to increase the coverage. It will be available for mobile services from 1 April 2017. In addition, the Agency is actively participating in regional dialogues in which local and regional representatives and mobile operators meet to discuss and find solutions to how coverage can be improved.

Active spectrum management is the most important tool that PTS can use to encourage continued expansion of mobile networks, with a focus on creating the maximum benefits to society through the utilisation of a spectrum.
