Fourteen winners in twelfth PTS innovation competition

19/05/2016

The Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) has announced fourteen winners in the twelfth PTS innovation competition. The theme was Active Leisure Time and the winning projects will share SEK 20.6 million in funding.

In its twelfth innovation competition, PTS called for projects that use information and communication technology to increase the opportunities for more active and meaningful leisure time for everyone. The aim is to make it easier and more enjoyable to pursue different leisure activities. This applies to physical as well as mental and social activities. The winning projects will make things easier for everyone regardless of ability, but especially for people with disabilities.

"Access to varied leisure activities is something to which everyone should be entitled. Due to the gap between needs and offerings, the same opportunities are not available to all today. Many activities cannot yet fulfil the needs of people with disabilities, for example. As a result, we are very pleased that the projects we have announced as the winners of the latest PTS innovation competition all have the potential to increase the opportunities for more varied leisure time for more people," says Catarina Wretman, Acting Director General at PTS.

124 winners in six years

PTS is tasked with working to enhance accessibility and usability in electronic communication and postal services. One way in which we do this is by organising innovation competitions twice a year. Since the start in 2010, PTS has held twelve competitions and funded 124 projects in the amount of SEK 161 million. In addition to the actual funding, winners are also offered assistance with developing a business model and launching their product or service.

Meticulous selection process with expert panel

The competition begins with an announcement after which applicants have six weeks to submit their entries. PTS then makes an initial selection based on certain criteria, such as how each application relates to the theme and the Design for All concept. Those who are accepted to the next round must present their projects to PTS and an expert panel. This panel is comprised of representatives from private enterprise, the public sector, academia and the technology industry, as well as innovators and users. The selected applicants must conduct a preliminary study. Once PTS has evaluated the preliminary studies, a decision is made as to which projects will receive funding and the opportunity to make everyday life easier for many people.

Award ceremony on PTS Innovation Day – 1 June 2016

All winners receive a diploma on PTS Innovation Day, to be held on 1 June 2016. This will see more than 100 participants from the private and public sectors with an interest in accessibility issues and innovation gather at Norra Latin/City Conference Center in Stockholm. Participation is free and you can register your interest to attend already today by sending an e-mail to innovationsdag@pts.se or visiting www.pts.se/innovationsdag.
