24/02/2004
PTS' first evaluation of the assignment by the Government.
The National Post and Telecom Agency (PTS), in December 2002, was assigned by the Government to compile information about Internet security, and make this available for Internet users no later than 31 December 2003. The information shall be aimed at households, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and organisations and small and medium-sized public authorities and agencies.
The Government has decided that PTS may appropriate at most 2 500 000 kronor to implement the assignment. According to the assignment, PTS shall evaluate the assignment and report on it in conjunction with the annual report for 2003. The final report of the results achieved and how the funds have been used shall be submitted no later than 30 June 2004. This report is PTS’s first evaluation of the assignment. The assignment has been conducted as a normal information project. During the course of the project, information has been gathered and the work continuously checked through contacts with other authorities and organisations.
The overall information objective has been to enhance the awareness and knowledge of the target groups about security on the Internet so that they will use the Internet in a more secure way and not expose themselves to unnecessary risks.
A website and an interactive course together with an information card with a stand and a brochure were launched in the beginning of November 2003. PTS also issued a special feature issue concerning Internet security of its magazine Get Connected during December 2003.
Just over two months after the launch, PTS can observe:
- 40 000 visits to the website
- 9 000 visits to the interactive course
- 60 press clippings • 60 000 information cards with table stand have been distributed
- 13 000 brochures Surf Securely have been distributed
- 8 000 magazines Get Connected have been distributed
- The majority of organisations link with and use the free web adverts (so-called ‘banners’) that are offered
- Daily e-mail enquiries about Internet security
During January, PTS has conducted fifteen telephone interviews with both the direct target group and various actors interested in enhancing the knowledge of the target groups about security on the Internet. The result of the telephone interviews shows that fourteen out of fifteen parties interviewed consider that the overall impression of the website and the accompanying printed material is very good or good.
