Consumers can now test the security of their computer at PTS

12/04/2005

Today the National Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) is launching a new web service, which affords consumers an opportunity to test computer security.

Through this web service, which is available on www.pts.se/testadatorn, a consumer who is connected to the Internet from home can obtain a grade relating to whether their computer is open to violation when they surf.

- Enhancing confidence in and making the Internet more secure is a priority issue for PTS. I am pleased that we can offer the consumer a concrete tool that can help everyone to surf more securely, says Marianne Treschow, Director-General of PTS.

After a few minutes, this computer test gives the consumer a red, orange or green light depending on whether the test has discovered inadequacies in the security of the computer. If the test uncovers so-called weaknesses, the consumer can get more technically detailed information about these. The computer test is based on the program Nessus, which has been developed with an open source code. It discovers inadequacies in security for ordinary operating systems such as Windows XP, 2000, 98 and various variants of Linux. It can also discover inadequacies in Apple computers to some extent. In order to gain better access to information and to be able to enhance their knowledge about security on the Internet, the consumer can now also put questions to an interactive web assistant. On www.pts.se/internetsakerhet, Rita answers basic questions about security on the Internet for consumers. Test your computer by visiting www.pts.se/testadatorn.
