By the end of 2004, there were just over 80,000 fixed telephone subscriptions operating with alternative technology, so-called ‘IP based telephony’. This has more than doubled compared with the previous year, where the number was 38,400. This is shown in the National Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) report The Swedish Telecommunications Market 2004.

At the same time, this new opportunity to change supplier of the traditional fixed subscription has had a clear impact among Swedish consumers during the first three months of 2005.
Competition provides consumers with greater freedom of choice
PTS considers that the changes within fixed telephony have great potential for improving competition. Consumers are given greater freedom of choice, in the form of provider and services. Moreover, the services are often less expensive for the consumer.
Rapid growth within broadband
The broadband market is that part of the telecommunications market that is growing most rapidly. Revenues were just over 5 billion kronor in this market, representing an increase of 29 per cent compared with 2003. The number of broadband customers is also increasing. In December 2004, the number of household customers with broadband connections was 1.23 million, compared with 911,000 in the previous year. The Swedish Telecommunications Market is PTS's annual report describing developments within the area of fixed and mobile call services and also data communications and Internet services.
