Responsibility

PTS is one of 14 sector authorities with responsibility for ensuring that the objectives of the Disability Policy are realised. On the part of PTS, this responsibility entails the Agency striving to ensure accessibility and usability within the areas of postal services and electronic communications.

PTS also represents Sweden in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and will lead its work between 2006 and 2010 since Sweden was elected to serve on the governing council of the ITU. As a part of this work, PTS intends to give all countries around the world access to the information society and foster increased potential for persons with functional impairment to take part in this.

“Modern telecommunications technology can be very advantageous for everyone. Sweden, for example, is among the best countries in the world at developing services to improve the daily lives of people with functional impairment. Technology as a possibility for everyone is an issue that we will pursue within the ITU,” says Marianne Treschow, Director-General of PTS.

Services and trials

The directives of the Agency state that PTS may meet the need for special postal and counter services through procurement, in addition to electronic communications services used by people with functional impairment.

PTS is currently in the process of procuring eight services within electronic communications and postal services for people with functional impairment. PTS also runs trials to evaluate usability and shed light on new technical possibilities. Click on “Services” and “Trials” in the menu to the left to read more about PTS’s services and trials.

Collaboration and harmonisation

PTS shall strive to ensure that the objectives of the Disability Policy are achieved within the area of responsibility of the Agency by it serving as a forum, providing support and pursuing issues in relation to other relevant parties. The aim of PTS is to develop forms of collaboration with various market stakeholders.

PTS consults with disability associations in order to conduct dialogue concerning strategically important issues within the area. By participating in standardisation and collaboration fora, both nationally and internationally, PTS strives to ensure that aspects related to people with disability are taken into consideration in the fora where communication issues are dealt with.
