Increasing data traffic in the mobile networks

11/23/2018

Private individuals account for a large part of the increase in the volume of data in the mobile networks. This is one of the findings of the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) report, The Swedish Telecom Market for the first half of 2018. Review the material in our statistics portal.

The volume of data traffic in the mobile networks continued to increase in the first six months of 2018, growing by 30 per cent. This increase is just as large as in the first half of 2017. Private mobile phone subscriptions for voice and data drove the increase in traffic and generated an average of 6.4 Gigabytes per subscription and month, which was an increase of 52 per cent.

The number of subscriptions with both voice and data continues to grow, while the subscriptions with either only voice or only data continue to decrease.

Increasing numbers of people are making voice calls over the 4G networks, by so-called VoLTE (Voice over LTE). Now, 20 per cent of all mobile voice traffic takes place this way. This can be compared to 1 per cent one year earlier.

Fixed broadband – fibre growing

Two thirds of all subscriptions for fixed broadband are over fibre; there are now 2.5 million such subscriptions in Sweden. The increase was 15 per cent during this period. In total, there are 3.9 million subscriptions for fixed broadband in Sweden.

There were 2.7 million subscriptions with download speeds of between 100 Mbit/s and 1 Gbit/s, which was an increase of 15 per cent. Subscriptions of 1 Gbit/s or more have doubled to 104,000 subscriptions.

- We see the fact that customers continue to demand larger amounts of data both in the mobile networks and fixed networks as an indication to the market to continue investing in and expanding the IT infrastructure in Sweden, says Dan Sjöblom, Director-General of the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority.

The report also shows:

  • Fixed telephony
The number of subscriptions for fixed telephony continues to decrease, dropping by 15 per cent. There are now 2.4 million such subscriptions in Sweden. Of these, 1.4 million subscriptions are for IP telephony.
  • Traditional pay-TV subscriptions
There were 2.9 million digital pay-TV subscriptions, which is as many as last year. The number of pay-tv subscriptions over fibre increased by 16 per cent, to 1.1 million. Fibre is the largest distribution platform for digital pay-TV subscriptions.
